Berry on Bentley
August 28, 2008 06:00 AM
Mark Berry has thoughts on the latest from Florida and the Todd Bentley scandal. He quotes Peter Wagner. Worth a read.

old post: burning bush as a worship treat
August 28, 2008 01:27 AM
There are 000,000's of words on this blog, so while on sabbatical I am reposting some old posts. This is in honour of the lectionary text for this coming Sunday. It is also in honour of the worshipping community, because...

Reinterpreting the Lakeland Fallout
August 28, 2008 12:00 AM
I called it “Apostolic Fallout” a couple of weeks ago, and a few days after that I asked, “Is Bently Taking the ICA Down With Him?” Before I go further, I want to clarify that this is not really about Lakeland, or Bentley, except insofar as they illustrate symptoms of a larger problem. That’s where we need to focus our deep consideration at the moment. Leadership of the Lakeland revival-thing has been passed back to the local leaders and Bentley has properly been

Ok, so not a runner…
August 28, 2008 12:00 AM
Well today confirmed all of our suspicions… Sam is not going to break any world speed records in his lifetime. He was in the last heat of the boys 50 m and you can tell by the lack of any other runners in sight where he came in this race! Ellie (on the left in blue) ran fourth [...]

Is seeing where God was at work in the world and jumping in to help etc, the last gasp of a Church that still believes itself to be at the Centre rather than Marginal in its Existence?
August 27, 2008 07:56 PM
Paul writes â?? Iâ??ve recently finished reading an essay by Robert W. Jenson, What is a Post-Christian (included in this interesting collection of essays) in which he argues that in a post-Church / post-Christian (Iâ??d say â??post-Christendomâ?) context the invitation...

Run Fat Boy Run!
August 27, 2008 06:00 PM
Today is Sam & Ellie’s athletics carnival. I am a dad who was a phys ed teacher, pretty keen athlete and trainer of athletes. When athletics carnivals came around I would be there before and after school for 3 months teaching, training and preparing kids for the carnival. We had some outstanding athletes and we developed [...]

Abandoned Church in Fish Creek
August 27, 2008 06:00 PM

“President Bush is interested — as no other occupant of the White House has been for quite a long time — in how the past can provide guidance for the future.”
August 27, 2008 04:00 PM
So says John Lewis Gaddis, the Robert A. Lovett Professor of Military and Naval History at Yale University, in The American Interest: George W. Bush, whatever else one might say about him, has been a most remarkable President: Historians will be debating his legacy for decades to come. If past patterns hold, their conclusions will not [...]

We bought one of these this week.  I had wanted a camera that I could use at work and carry with me everywhere.  It is basically a Flip Video camera competitor but takes HD video for a lower price.  No internal memory but 1 gig SD cards are going for $7.99 in some places around [...]

I.O.U.S.A.
August 27, 2008 09:59 AM
Rick Bennett has a good post about this.  Head over there and for those of you who are too busy to click and read, watch the trailer below. The question is can the United States recover from this.  Several articles I have been reading lately all mention the lost U.S. manufacturing jobs which is painfully obvious.  [...]

The Road Ahead
August 27, 2008 06:00 AM
Right now there isn’t much that is certain about the road ahead. However if we’re really honest there never is. Sometimes we have this illusion of certainty that we sit with for a while, but in truth life is way more fickle than we would like to admit. We don’t have anywhere near as much control [...]

STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL OF LIFE: Embracing the Uncertainty
August 27, 2008 12:00 AM
Hardship and suffering seem to be an inevitable part of life. Is God accomplishing something with our life experiences or is it all just meaningless? Even tragedy can train us if we let it. If we can learn to be more comfortable with all of life?s uncertainty and unanswered questions, perhaps we begin to understand the mystery and paradox that is part of life in Christ.

The Cost of Fuel is Changing Globalization
August 26, 2008 07:59 PM
The New York Times has a good article on how the rise of fuel prices is changing globalization. The cost of shipping a 40-foot container from Shanghai to the United States has risen to $8,000, compared with $3,000 early in the decade, according to a recent study of transportation costs. Big container ships, the pack mules [...]

Overheard: A Father-Daughter Exchange
August 26, 2008 02:00 PM
Having the day to myself today, this morning I took myself out to breakfast. This is something I will often do for no other reason than to get out of the house and be served coffee while I read or brainstorm a few notes onto a 3×5 card. Since I work at home, there are times when it’s simply a healthy idea to get out of the basement once in a while — even if I’m not actually meeting someone, it helps to be out in public sometimes. And sometimes there is an element of peo

Vignettes from the Life of Brother Maynard
August 25, 2008 04:00 PM
Even my Wife is Cynical A friend was telling us about a recent encounter that a mutual acquaintance from our CLB had had — this out of some desire to not let their handling of the coals from the Lakeland fire (or however they put it) fizzle without becoming in some way evangelistic. Our friend thought about a book she picked up about how to stop making God look bad and I characterized it as a drive-by prayer-bombing, but apparently the subject in this case was quite touched and began co

Forests and Trees
August 24, 2008 06:00 PM

HoMY 67: Wonderful Grace of Jesus
August 24, 2008 06:00 AM
Continuing along with Then Sings My Soul: The Hymns of My Youth (I’m not out of hymns quite yet), we come to a selection written and composed by Haldor Lillenas in 1918. I have to say it’s pretty upbeat for church in 1918, perhaps it was scandalous at the time. Its bouncy tempo and echoes make it fun to sing, and Lillenas cautioned in his autobiography against distorting the words of the hymn by performing it at too rapid a tempo. Haldor Lillenas was born November 19, 1885 at

BETWEEN THE IDEA AND THE REALITY, BETWEEN THE MOTION AND THE ACT...

The more intrigue I feel for all things "emerging" the more I cold I can easily get toward the simpler things of the faith. It is as if I have a hobby (reading emergent authors/web sites/ etc.) and a faith, and the two get confused. This article is me processing my "hobby" getting in the way of the faith that it is meant to aid.

Disordered Love

I can’t remember where I found this, but it struck a chord… â??Our central lie is in the discrepancy between the language of worship and the actions of worship. Neighbourliness & the Increase of Social Capital
August 22, 2008 08:00 PM
In my reading of Clay Shirky’s Here Comes Everybody, I came across his brief mention and discussion of social capital, which he takes from Harvard Sociologist Robert Putnam’s 2000 book, Bowling Alone : The Collapse and Revival of American Community. In fact, Putnam didn’t originate the term in his 1995 article, “Bowling Alone: America’s Declining Social Capital” nor the book it became. The modern use of the term is ascribed to Jane Jacobs in the 60’s,
